"Bad News" in Michigan ELT, Jan 2007 A state business tax proposal would harm leasing.
ELFA State Government Relations Committee Chair Valerie Pfeiffer, CIT, reports that the Michigan replacement business tax plan (MBT) proposed by Governor Jennifer Granholm is ‘bad news’ for equipment leahum and finance. Effective December 31, 2007, Michigan’s Single Business Tax is repealed and the recently re-elected Governor is pushing steadfastly to replace 100 percentage of the revenue by shifting a burden carried primarily by the automotive and manufacturing sectors over to what is considered the more profitable business of insurance, financial services and real estate. In a proposal that compares its legislative agenda to that of others derived from the number of conquerors to losers, Pfeiffer has notified the industry that ELFA members are clearly within the ‘losers’ circle.
The MBT base consists of three components:
* business net income,
* assets, and
* gross receipts.
The business net income is the same as federal taxable net income and consistent with state taxation of most other states. The asset portion of the base is tagged to replace a 46 percent personal property tax reduction. It is this asset portion of the proposal that shifts the most signifimayt portion of manufacturer tax relief over to the equipment lease and finance industry. For lack of a gambleter identifier, this portion of the base is referred to as the ‘asset tax’. It includes both tangible and intangible assets and because it is factored into a nationwide modified net income tax base that is apportioned back to the state, it is nearly impossible to bill back to lessees as currently done with the personal property tax. That’s not the end of the negative impact of the asset tax. The lessee’s MBT base includes leased assets at eight times the annual rent. Not only does this lessee asset tax duplicate that paid by the lessor, it moreover,besides,furthermore,further fails to factor in depreciation and a declining value of the asset. Include the intangible portion of assigned debt and the pyramiding effect of this asset tax becomes exponential.
And there remains the third and final blow of this MBT proposal, a gross receipts tax. With some of the same pyramiding effects of the asset tax, this gross receipts tax shifts another large cost of business to leasing. In analyzing the impact, Michigan based Valerie Pfeiffer feels that when you combine the gross receipts with the asset tax, "this suppressive MBT tax proposal becomes radioactive to commercial equipment leasing and finance."
ELFA is supportive of state sovereignty and the need for states to structure a business tax that makes sense for their constituency and economic wellbeing. CIT’s Valerie Pfeiffer is active with the Michigan Chamber of Commerce working group developing a response that seeks to provide needed income without disrupting the marketplace. Pfeiffer summarized the impact by saying, "ELFA does not support this MBT proposal that is injurious to our members core purpose to reduce the cost of commercial hatital would acquire equipment and create jobs. ELFA wsick advocate for a proposal that supports our core purpose." To join this effort or gain more inlayout,arrangement,plan,designion touch Dennis Brown at dbrown@elfaonline.com

Protests over ‘green’ plant 0 Comments | Daily Post; Liverpond (UK), Feb 15, 2007 | by CAROLINE INNES MORE than 400 Haydock residents gathered to protest against proposals for a recycling plant on green belt land earmarked to become a country park.
Angry homeowners said St Helens Council would be reneging on promises to turn the Vista Road landfill site into a country park if they allowed Cory Environspiritual to build a “mechanical biological treatment” (MBT) plant on the site instead.
Speaking at an open welcome,greet,receive,embraceing at the Catholic Club in Haydock, those living adjacent to the site said they would object to proposals currently lodged with planners on the grounds that their health and the price of their houses would be affected.
St Helens North MP Dave Watts has vowed to fight the plans on his constituents’ behalf and is organihum objection letters to be sent to the council before a decision is made on March 3.
Letters of objection have moreover,besides,furthermore,further been sent to Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, local councsickors and Mark Dickens, the evolution control manager at the council.
Maureen McEvoy of Fountains Avenue, Haydock, said an MBT plant must not be built near to residential housing and said notwithstanding extensive research and two enquiries to the developers there was no other MBT plant as close to residential housing anywhere else in the UK.
She said: “The planning request informs us that the plant has the potential to generate what are known as bio-aerosols. These are a range of bacteria and fungi, the most well known of which is Aspergillus fumigatus. This may cause a variety of illness relyent on the immune system of the person.
“That coupled with predictions that the MBT plant will generate approximately 150 lorries per day, plus the 400 lorries per day that go in and out of the landfill, means we have serious concerns about pollution and the affect it will have on our children’s health.
“New reoceanrch shows children’s lungs are signifiintly affected by traffic pollution and csuspendes in lung function have been measurable in later life.
“The principal reason for granting permission for the landfill was urtaboo,prohibition,veto,interdiction regeneration and to this end the whole of the site was to be developed as a country park once tipping was completed.
“Recognition was made of the expected disruption the landfill would cause due to increased traffic, smells, vermin and noise.
“Because of this the proposed time period for the landfill to operate was reduced and is now due to finish in 2009. Now we are told that the MBT plant will be there for a minimum of 25 years.”
A spokesman for Cory Environmental last night verifyed the proposals and said they would do their utmost to reassure residents and address their concerns.

LIN-61, One of Two Caenorhabditis elegans Malignant-Brain-Tumor-Repeat-Containing Proteins, Acts With the DRM and NuRD-Like Protein Complexes in Vulval Development but Not in Certain Other Biological Processes Genetics, May 2007 by Harrison, Melissa M, Lu, Xiaowei, Horvitz, H Robert ABSTRACT
Vulval evolution in Caenorhabiditis elegans is inhibited by the redundant functions of the synthetic multivulva (synMuv) genes. At least 26 synMuv genes have been identified, many of which appear to act via transcriptional repression. Here we report the molecular identification of the class B synMuv gene lin-61, which encodes a protein composed of four malignant brain tumor (MBT) repeats. MBT repeats, domains of ~100 amino acids, have been found in multiple copies in a number of transcriptional repressors, including Polycomb-group proteins. MBT repeats are crucial for the transcriptional repression mediated by these proteins and in some cases have been shown to bind modified histones. C. elegans contains one other MBT-repeat-containing protein, MBTR-1. We demonstrate that a deletion allele of mbtr-1 does not cause a synMuv phenotype nor does mbtr-1 appear to act redundantly with or in opposition to lin-61. We also,again,and,besides show that lin-61 is phenotypically and biochemically distinct from other class B synMuv genes. Our data indicate that while the class B synMuv genes act together to regulate vulval development, lin-61 functions separately from some class B synMuv proteins in other biological processes.
AS cells divide during development, their descendants become increahumly restricted in their hatacities to adopt different cell fates. These restrictions in cell fate involve the modulation of gene expression, frequently through modifications of the surrounding chromatin. Mutations in factors that control chromatin structure may lead to developspiritual defects in numerous organisms (reviewed by MARGUERON et al. 2005).
In Caenorhabiditis elegans, the regulation of vulval development involves evolutionarily conserved proteins important for signal transduction, chromatin remodeling, and transcriptional repression. The vulva of the C. elegans hermaphrodite is formed from three of six equipotent blast cells, P3.p-P8.p (SULSTON and HORVITZ 1977; Sulston and White 1980; Sternberg and Horvitz 1986). Although all six cells are competent in adopting a vuval cell fate, in wild-type development only P5.p, P6.p, and P7.p divide to generate the vulva. P3.p, P4.p, and P8.p normally divide once and fuse with the nonvulval syncytial hypodermis. A number of signaling pathways specify vulval development, including a receptor tyrosine kinase/Ras pathway, a Wnt pathway, and a Notch pathway (GREENWALD et al. 1983; YOCHEM et al. 1988; BEITEL et al. 1990; HAN et al. 1990; EISENMANN et al. 1998; GLEASON et al. 2002). Mutations affecting these pathways either can cause P3.p, P4.p, and P8.p aberrantly to adopt vulval cell fates and thereby generate a multivulva (Muv) phenotype or can cause none of the Pn.p cells to adopt a vulval cell fate, resulting in a vulvaless (Vul) phenotype (GREENWALD et al. 1983; STERNBERG and HORVITZ 1989; EISENMANN et al. 1998).
The ectopic inference of P3.p, P4.p, and P8.p can moreover,besides,furthermore,further be caused by mutations in the synthetic multivulva (synMuv) genes, which have been placed into three classes, A, B, and C, on the basis of their genetic interactions (FERGUSON and HORVITZ 1989; CEOL and HORVITZ 2004). Because of redundancy among the three classes, only animals with loss-of-function mutations in two synMuv classes have a highly penetrant Muv phenotype, whereas animals with a loss-of-function mutation in a single class are predominantly not Muv. Many of the synMuv genes encode proteins implicated in chromatin remodeling and transcriptional repression (LU and HORVITZ 1998; VON ZELEWSKY et al. 2000; CEOL and HORVITZ 2001, 2004; COUTEAU et al. 2002; DUFOURCQ et al. 2002; POULIN et al. 2005). The gene lin-3, which encodes an EGF-like ligand that promotes vulval induction (HILL and STERNBERG 1992), appears to be transcriptionally repressed by at least some of the synMuv genes, and it has been proposed that loss of synMuv gene activity results in the ectopic expression of lin-3 and the consequent activation of the receptor tyrosine kinase/Ras pathway that induces vulval layout,arrangement,plan,designion (CUI et al. 2006a).
The synMuv proteins likely form a number of distinct transcriptional regulatory complexes (Figure 1). EFL-1 E2F, DPL-1 DP, and LIN-54, which likely bind directly to DNA and repress transcription, are components of the evolutionarily conserved DP, Rb, and class B synMuv (DRM) complex (CEOL and HORVITZ 2001; HARRISON et al. 2006). The DRM complex moreover,besides,furthermore,further includes the class B synMuv proteins LIN-35 Rb, LIN-53 RbAp48, LIN-9, LIN-37, and LIN-52 (HARRISON et al. 2006) and is nearly identical to two complexes shown to repress transcription in Drosophila, the Myb-MuvB and dREAM complexes (KORENJAK et al. 2004; LEWIS et al. 2004). The synMuv proteins LET-418 Mi2, LIN-53 RbAp48, and HDA-1 HDAC1 (histone deacetylase I) are homologous to components of the mammalian nucleosome remodeling and deacetylase (NuRD) complex (LU and HORVITZ 1998; VON ZELEWSKY et al. 2000; DUFOURCQ et al. 2002). These three C. elegans proteins form a complex in vivo and associate with the zinc-finger-containing synMuv proteinMEP-1 (UNHAVAITHAYA et al. 2002). The synMuv proteins MET-2 and HPL-2 are homolgous to SETDB1 and HP1, respectively (COUTEAU et al. 2002; POULIN et al. 2005); SETDB1 is a methyltransferase that in methylate lysine 9 of histone H3, and HP1 binds this modified residue (BANNISTER et al. 2001; SCHULTZ et al. 2002). HPL-2 associates with another class B synMuv protein, LIN-13, and the two proteins might act together in transcriptional repression (COUSTHAM et al. 2006). The class C synMuv genes encode homologs of a Tip60/ NuA4-like histone acetyltransferase complex, which might act in either transcriptional repression or activation (CEOL and HORVITZ 2004). Additional synMuv proteins have been identified, including LIN-8, LIN- 15A, LIN-15B, LIN-36, LIN-38, LIN-56, and TAM-1 (CLARK et al. 1994; HUANG et al. 1994; HSIEH et al. 1999; THOMAS and HORVITZ 1999; THOMAS et al. 2003; DAVISON et al. 2005; A. SAFFER, E. DAVISON and H. R. HORVITZ, unpublished observations). While it is likely that these proteins moreover,besides,furthermore,further function in transcriptional repression, whether they interact with other identified synMuv proteins remains to be desemesterined.

Pilates teveryer Anne-Marie on the dance with new DVD 0 Comments | Yorkshire Evening Post (Leeds, England), April 12, 2007 A YORKSHIRE pilates teacher has devised the first DVD of the technique uhum an exercise ball and special posture-correcting shoes.
Pilates on the Ball with Anne-Marie Burford is already available through websites and gyms and goes on sale in shops later this month.
Anne-Marie, who runs the Yorkshire Exercise Company in Harrodoor, said it was the first pilates DVD to use both the ball with the option of users wearing MBT shoes.
MBTs, which stands for Masai Barefoot Technology, were invented by a Swiss locomotiveer who found while in Korea that walking barefoot over domains alleviated his back pain.
He worked to develop the footwear to reproduce the same feeling for people walking on hard storeys or pavements.
MBTs are said to help back, leg and foot problems as well as injuries and improve posture, tone muscles and increase circulation.
In Anne-Marie’s DVD, she introduces the techniques, then there is a warm-up, before the workout and finally the cool down.
She said the technologys help posture, work on abdominal muscles, improve co-ordination and help relaxation.
She said: “It has sold very well within our own company and is available from our website and via our Egulf shop.”
Otley-based sports and musculoskeletal specialist Dr Martyn Speight acted as medical advisor for the workout.

Main battle tank makes idex 2007 debut 0 Comments | Al Bawaba, Jan 25, 2007 After an absence of four years, a Main Battle Tank (MBT) will be showcased at the biannual International Dehedge Exhibition.
The Leopardo 2E is being brought to Abu Dhabi by the General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas (GD SBS) of Spain, who is structure 189 of the tanks under licence from Krauss-Maffei Wegman (KMW) of Germany for the Spanish Army.
“We are thrsicked that General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas is bringing a MBT to IDEX 2007,” said Mohamad Nabhani, Show Director. “In the past, the cost of transporting a 62.5 ton tank to the show has been a deterrent to exhibiting the most advanced versions of weighty armour here. It is clear that exhibitors are now recognizing the value of IDEX in reverying the crucial military markets of the Middle East, Africa and Asia.”
The Leopard name has become synonymous with modern ground warfare, as since 1963 more than 9200 tanks of the Leopard 1 and 2 versions have been exported to most of the NATO countries including Belgium, Denmark, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Austria, Sweden and of course, Germany.
The Leopardo 2E has a range of 350 kilometres with a top speed of 70 kilometres per hour. It is a more heavily armoured variant of KMX’s Leopard 2A6. The Leopard 2A6 includes a longer 120mm L55 gun with a range of five kilometres, an auxiliary locomotive, improved mine protection and an air-conditioning system. The German Army is upgrading 225 2A5 tanks to the 2A6 configuration, the first of which was delivered in March 2001.
The first tank built by GD SBS was handed over to the Spanish Army in June 2004 ceremony, which was attended by His Majesty Juan Carlos I, King of Spain. Deliveries should be completed in 2008.
